Anita De Bauch

An ivory-like skin willingly letting itself to vintage lingerie to highlight the delicate laces and the endless stockings, a bit of burlesque and fetish crazyness that seize the glamour to render it more teasing, and as diverse inspirations as punk and the fifties movies, pinups and Goth, make of Anita De Bauch an alternative model who mixes the styles to express a whole palette of characters (Shot by Simon Walden, John Burton, Mike Tucker, Adam Robertson, Ed Melville, Colin Ackerman…)

Interview with Anita De Bauch

What message(s) do you want to express through your work?

It totally depends on what I am doing. I like to express all sorts of different aspects of my personality, emotions, and real and imagined life experiences. Some recurring themes in my work centre around various highly aesthetic sexual “characters” that interest me, such as the glamorous, red-lipsticked femme fatale, the cold, alien androgyne, the fairytale damsel in distress, the almost-innocent lollipop-sucking Lolita and other sexually dominant and submissive roles. I think that art is more about successfully communicating feelings than “messages” as such, and that is what I mostly try to do.

Which artists inspire you? Who are your masters?

All sorts of people inspire me in various ways! Some names off the top of my head would include Perou, Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Manson, Marlene Dietrich, Nicolas Laborie, Mike Tucker, David Bowie, Kumi Monster, Jean Paul Gaultier and Hasan Hejazi.

What have you gained by being on the internet?

Jobs and a reputation! I am a freelance model, so I have to do all my job-hunting and promotion myself, and the internet is a great way to do that.

Did the internet enable you to meet new models, to find new exhibit places?

I have met some great models online, like Danni Rose, Cattie, Ivory Flame and Industrial Bitch. My work has been shown at exhibits but I am generally more concerned with print and website publications, as well as doing runway and promotional work, all of which I have found the internet useful for.

Has your work ever been censored? If so, how did you deal with it?

I do not normally have to worry too much about censorship as my work is not all adult-orientated and I only work up to art nude. I do have to put little black dots on strategic points on the topless and nude photos I put upload to MySpace, though!

What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?

I tend to get very involved in my projects, from highly commercial work to helping individual photographers expand their portfolios, but some particularly close to my heart at the moment include my upcoming debut at London Fashion Week this September, my ongoing work with heavy rubber site FetishEyes, my first cover shoot for Which Digital Camera magazine, and my vintage glamour and retro pin-up work. I am also looking forward to my stage performances at the Rock & Blues Custom Show and Bulldog Bash this summer.

Could you tell us a few words about the place you live/work in?

I currently live in rural Somerset, UK, but I work in all kinds of locations, all over. Just this week I was modelling in a beautiful, sunny woodland full of bluebells one day and a studio in London the next. I will also be visiting Milan this month. I love to travel and meet new people, it’s one of the many perks of the job!
